Heart with puzzle - pinkHealth Needs Assessments

Southampton Data Observatory brings together data, analysis and needs assessments from key stakeholders across Southampton and Hampshire and, combined with nationally published data, makes it accessible to professionals, businesses, the voluntary sector, citizens and communities. This page draws together all of the detailed health needs assessments underpinning the Southampton Single Needs Assessment, organised by topic to make access as easy as possible.

These needs assessments and intelligence briefings provide a more in depth look at specific issues in the city; providing an analysis of need based on the best available data and insight, current services in place to address the identified need and an assessment of the evidence of what works to address any identified gaps. Updates are added regularly as new needs assessments are conducted and published.

Needs assessments are available to download below organised alphabetically by topic. Other resources can also be downloaded from the data by topic page, presentation slide sets page and maps page.

Domestic Abuse

Domestic and sexual abuse (DSA) is an umbrella term that encompasses any form of abuse between any family members. Intimate partner abuse (IPA) is a term for DSA that occurs between adults in an intimate partner relationship. In recent years the need to focus on preventing perpetration of DSA, alongside and complementary to supporting victims and survivors of DSA, has become increasingly clear. This includes preventing people from ever becoming perpetrators of abuse, as well as supporting perpetrators to stop their abusive behaviour. The potentially lifelong repercussions of being a victim of DSA, or being exposed to DSA as a child make reducing DSA a key factor in improving the wellbeing of people living in Southampton. As a result a needs assessment was conducted in 2019 on the preventing perpetrators of intimate partner abuse in Southampton. This can be downloaded below:

The impact of smoking in Southampton is significant, with around 1 in 6 people (17.5%) smoking in the city, compared with just under 15% in England and 14.4% in Hampshire.
